Project Manager Zachary Orr for Superior Steel & Ironworkers uses the Leica BLK360 to capture a 3D point cloud scan of a project in Bellevue, Seattle USA.
The scans are imported into Autodesk Recap Pro, where the point cloud is meshed and cleaned up. The file is then exported from Recap Pro and imported into Tekla Structures, where the required steelwork is detailed with the accuracy of field-verified measurements.
Zachary was initially skeptical if the accuracy of such a compact scanner would work with the tolerances he required. However, Zachary has since performed multiple scans of existing concrete structures and used the point clouds to field-verify dimensions for their steel fabrication. He also field verified the same measurements with a tape measureand found the measurements from the Leica BLK360 to be accurate down to a 32nd of an inch.

Tekla Structures can import a variety of point cloud formats, with e57 and PTS being exported directly from Autodesk Recap Pro after registering the BLK360 scans.

This interest was passed on to Jim, two of his brothers, and his brother-in-law. The family’s legacy is an established commitment to the iron industry, and the incorporation of Superior Steel & Ironworkers on April 1st, 2006 was a testament to that legacy.
