1 December 2021 -MELBOURNE- C.R. Kennedy Survey announced today that it has been awarded a contract for the supply and maintenance of 38 advanced utility locating systems for SA Water.
SA Water’s Customer Field Services teams operate from numerous depots across regional South Australia. These depots are supported with resources that enable safe and efficient operation, maintenance and repairs of water assets – including underground pipelines and service pipes. The work can be 24/7 and individual experience and working knowledge within teams is diverse. A recent review identified a need to upgrade a range of underground locating equipment used by the depot teams, to make sure it continues to meet relevant industry standards.
To assist with this, SA Water selected the vLoc3 Pro advanced utility locator by Vivax-Metrotech, which will help field crews to carry out their utility detection work, including in full compliance with current requirements recommended by Dial-Before-You-Dig (DBYD) and the National Utility Locating Association (NULCA).
Vivax-Metrotech have taken a new look at how the signal strength from a radiating source is detected and shown on a display. They approached the challenge by acknowledging that the space around us is three dimensional and the signals are also three dimensional. Two sets of 3D antennas using three antennas per set are now used to analyse the quality of the signal and allow new views of the locate environment. Most beneficial to the field user are new and intuitive visualisation modes, in full color, such as the Transverse Graph showing both a graph of peak and null simultaneously, providing immediate measurement of signal distortion, or the Vector Locate that shows orientation, line position, and distance relative to the locator in 3D. The system is also capable to log your results and report all details via its cloud-based mobile application VMMAP, allowing customers to remotely and in real-time monitor and quality-check field work.
Warwick Crawford, SA Water Operation Improvement Lead said “As a provider of essential water services to South Australians, it’s important we equip our maintenance crews with tools and knowledge to enable them to work safely and efficiently. The support given by a supplier is also key, which we believe we have found in C.R. Kennedy, who are a national supplier of survey equipment, with offices and repair facilities nation-wide, including Adelaide.”
Mark Evans, SA Water District Leader said “Being part of the field maintenance crew, we value the investments our organisation make in new technology. The new visualisation techniques offered by the vLoc3 utility locator are supported by a colour screen enabling the user to interpret the quality of the signal via red, blue or green colour coding. The vLoc3’s ability to show us onscreen that there is distortion, has assisted in providing our operators an effective monitoring tool – simple color coding shows the operator that they have little or no distortion, medium distortion or heavy distortion whilst in the standard locate screen.”
Maurice Borer, C.R. Kennedy’s National Product Manager for Detection and Asset Mapping / GIS Systems, stated “This contract award reaffirms C.R. Kennedy’s technology leadership in providing advanced underground detection systems for safety, management and automation of underground detection and mapping tasks. We combine the best of breed technology, specialist in-house consulting expertise, and repair facilities, and are extremely pleased that SA Water decided to roll out the vLoc3 Pro across its operations in regional South Australia.”
